Not to be mean but I legitimately hate the buzzfeed-tier feminist fandom Mary Shelley has. I genuinely hate every single one of these people for being Like This.

What do I mean by Like This? Well, for starters they’re the type of people to still use the word ‘dudebro’ unironically, which should already tell you enough about their personality and intelligence. They also seem to think saying Mary Shelley invented the sci-fi genre (which is fucking debatable anyway) is some great shade against people they call dudebros. You guys ever seen that post where it’s like “Actually, Mary Shelley invented sci-fi therefore there are no fake geek girls only fake geek guys :^)” followed by like 20 quote unquote sassy gifs? That post exemplifies everything wrong with these people.

First of all, the conclusion is a total fucking leap, which only makes sense if you don’t understand anything about the issue of Fake Geek Girls and just made up strawmen of your opponents to argue with. Second of all, acting like this is some clever analysis, some amazing fucking roast is just laughable because the analysis completely asinine for reasons I just pointed out. Oh, and it’s really fucking telling these people are the type to decide the solution to exclusion of women in certain geek spaces is to exclude men.

Or how about that post I just reblogged? These people can’t fathom a successful woman not being some feminist queen of shade. They can’t understand such a woman, or probably even any woman, not constantly putting down the men around her. They just assume all women (well, all women they like) are the exact same as them – bitter, angry assholes hiding behind the veneer of a “sassy” personality.

For the record, when I say I hate these people, don’t imagine me seething with anger. There are people out there that make me even angrier. But this particular brand of Mary Shelley fans exemplify everything wrong with left-leaning fandom. They exemplify many of the things wrong with modern feminism. I honestly wish they would just shut up and not guve me headaches with their mind-numbingly bad takes.

Quick fun fact: the “sci fi” genre is a lot broader than most people realize, and under the broadest of terms The Iliad is considered science fiction.

Now, Mary Shelley did pioneer a more modern interpretation of science fiction as we know it today, because her novel Frankenstein used a very modern take on science being utilized in a bleeding-edge way that gave commentary on human society at the same time. But in the most general of terms, science fiction existed long before Mary Shelley.

But yeah, I’ve seen these people. Like that one post where someone grossly misinterpreted Frankenstein to be about how “durr hurr ebil men make an art and it fucks up humanity!” when that is NOT what the novel was about. I’m sure if Shelley were alive today, she’d be disgusted with the lot of these ‘fans’.

mary shelley: hey guys wouldnt it be spookers if a scientist made a monster. it fills my emo teen heart with fire. like ive seen these real spooky electric circus trick people do a thing making bits of corpse twitch, what it we could do that.

fandom dumbasses centuries later: see she was a feminist spiting the men around her by totally ripping into science and industry, what a goddesss

mary shelley: no. not what i meant. i just wanted a goofy horror story guys.
