Girls can be coders too
I don’t think they assumed that because she was a girl. They assumed she couldn’t code because she was a model and there is a perception that being smart and being beautiful are mutually exclusive.
Women talk about being being looked down upon for being women in STEM all the time tho, it really isn’t that crazy that they may be misogynistic
I’m a woman in STEM. Most of the people who discourage us from STEM aren’t men, but women pretending to look after us.
The career counselor who told me not to do IT because it “wasn’t female friendly”, my uncle’s wife’s mother who told me and I quote “why did you choose STEM? You probably struggle every day”, my own mother who told me that IT was “dangerous” and that my boss would “probably try to rape me.” All women.
A lot of women in STEM have also internalized this kind of fearmongering thanks to progressive circles trying to convince them they have a reason to be afraid, even though if you just show your worth for the most part people don’t care. And if you do face injustice, report it, there are laws to protect you.
These guys made an assumption based on her looks and profession as a model, not based on her gender.
Just because you don’t have trouble in STEM doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The idea that women shouldn’t be in STEM because they aren’t smart enough isn’t some made up fantasy sjws made up, its an actual thing people believe. I have no idea why you re so reluctant to think people can be sexism. Being generous is one thing, but you’re completely denying that the possibility that these people are basing their comments on misogyny
Yes at one point in time women were discouraged from STEM (but let’s be fair they were discouraged from basically every profession), but look at how many scholarships there are for women alone. Look at all the efforts that are being put into getting more women into STEM. That clearly means that the tide is changing and that it isn’t as frowned upon as it used to be.
The college I go to is a womens college where majority of the people there are doing something STEM related, all approved by their parents, all of them are planning to work in STEM. Most of the women in my family are working in STEM in the U.S. None of them have ever faced sexism or even racism from men while in their profession.
Without fail, the ones who assumed they were struggling or failing in their profession in some way were people doing liberal arts or sociology, or involved in activism of some kind. My one aunt who swears up and down that she can’t get work because she is a woman actually can’t hold on to a job because she has an anger issue.
The few men who DO legitimately think that women shouldn’t be in STEM? Most of them are redditors or 9gag basement dwellers who shouldn’t even be trusted to make a sandwich by themselves. If anything the guys here probably fall into that category.
