People who join cults tend to be weak willed and lost, normally very unhappy with their own personal lives and desperate enough to follow literally anyone who can bite back at them and show them some kind of purpose or to take a line from AHS “I wanted to take my hand off the wheel and let someone else tell me what to do.”
They normally have fully religious tones or supernatural elements and if your mom was worth a shit in her studies she would know that holding to your own convictions even in the face of doubt is a good way NOT to get suckered in, but also having them challenged from time to time allows you to create a very wide world view which many people sucked into cults don’t have.
If you think you are so weak willed and lost that you would be drawn into a CULT (which is a super tight definition and if your mother really did study them she would know how hard it is for groups to be labeled as such) that a debate is too much for you to handle then please don’t. By all means never debate because you’ll end up on the 9 news having killed yourself to catch a spaceship because a homeless man swore he was the second coming of Jesus.
But most of us can have conversations with other human beings without devolving into self doubt and fear.
