op was a terf so i’m stealing this post:

In honor of Britney Spears’ birthday (December 2), I want to remind everyone that this woman was publically ostracized for struggling with the onset of mental illness, divorce, and losing custody of her children after years of media scrutiny and hypersexualization starting at the age of 17. No, she is not just a crazy woman who shaved her head. She’s the victim of an industry that loves to build a woman up before tearing her down.

Well…. the goes the “Sony of Japan will stop the Californians who are censoring everything” mantra I’ve been hearing

That’s pretty bad, but what’s worse is that is hard to explain to people why it’s bad.

Like, the over-sexualization of the Japanese anime/videogame/other geek media is because it’s a safe haven from the soul-crushing socially-conservative mainstream Japanese society for many people. It’s a revolt against the norm, which hasn’t changed at all, basically, from the early 20th century.

no offens but people being overworked to death in industries like animation and making video games is a huge issue… like holy shit i’d prefer my favorite anime being delayed or a video game’s release being a bit late if it means people don’t suffer under intense conditions and stress

“In this essay I will” is a meme that only encourages the op to put forth ideas into the world without making a concrete claim allowing them to express ideas on a subject without conclusion while at the same time submitting a thesis as fact

“Thanks for coming to me TED talk,” in contrast, allows the op to claim that whatever statement they’ve said to be their final say on any given topic, but also allows people to grow on it as well, as are the nature of TED talks

We are creating shortcuts in communication and I love it

Me: Y’know, I’m not really excited about Disney’s upcoming remakes, but hopefully this means I can hear some decent covers of classic songs. I wonder how they’ll handle “Be Prepared” in the Lion King remak-

*”Be Prepared” May Be Cut From The Lion King Remake*

Me:

Bringing this back, because of the new teaser trailer recently released.

What?! That’s literally one of the best songs in the entire movie!

uh guys. I love the song too but uh. maybe nazi hyenas aren’t the best look in the current climate and that’s why they cut it

they’re in a no win situation with this. if they keep it and use different imagery then everyone screams about how they changed it and now it sucks

there’s always the madness of king scar if they want to dip into the broadway songs. it was meant to be in the movie anyway and was cut

“maybe nazi hyenas aren’t the best look in the current climate”

They weren’t Nazis, lmao. They used Nazi-esque imagery in part of the second verse, but that doesn’t make the villains direct parallels to the Nazis.

And even if they were, they’re explicitly portrayed as the bad guys. How is portraying Nazis as the bad guys “a bad look”?

Anyway, if Be Prepared is being dropped from the Lion King remake, then the remake is even more pointless than it already was.

There is a direct parallel to Nazis in the Lion King verse, though

Zira’s whole mantra in Lion Guard is that she is a Scar loyalist lions are the superior species, and should rightfully rule over all other animals with an iron fist for their own benefit. They’re introduced by literally kicking (friendly) hyenas out of their watering hole.

She even gets a song where she tries to recruit Kion:

…This came out like, 2 years ago, and racism allegories are a pretty notable thing in the series even now as it becomes more about the outlands war.

So if that’s the reason Be Prepared was dropped, when this show for an even younger audience is covering explicit nazi allegories, that’s kind of… Strange?

“But how can we do the song WITHOUT nazi imagery???”

Stageplay did just fine with their own take and didn’t use the nazi imagery.  Fuckin’ ain’t hard yo.  Just sing about your plot to kill the king and unify the hyenas to move into lion territory, promise the hyenas will be fed and treated as the top species while the lions do the hunting for them.  And you’re done.

Also doing a 1:1 recreation of the OG movie’s scene wouldn’t be that hard.  It’s not like seeing nazi imagery would be shocking since for the past two or three years now people won’t shut the fuck up about “nazi this” and “nazi that”.  You’d think people would want MORE nazi themes inserted into Scar’s propaganda song just to hammer the fuck in “this guy is bad guy”.

I also hear rumors that they’re cutting it to make Scar “more grounded/sympathetic/give him more depth”, and that just makes me want to slap my face so hard when I hear.

Scar isn’t supposed to be sympathetic! He kills his own to gain his throne, for crying out loud!

I can understand wanting to give Scar more depth, but you can do that without cutting out his signature musical number, and the thing which people remember him most for, outside of killing Mufasa. In fact, the musical did just that, with “The Madness of King Scar”.

You don’t need to adapt the number from the stage to the screen. You just add scenes in the remake where Scar begins to become paranoid and desperate, as well as do a more dialogue focused version of the scene, maybe combining it with the deleted scene which featured a reprise of “Be Prepared” (though, maybe not include the reprise, if you don’t feel like doing it, but I’d still keep the original song).
