and Ben does love Rey, he really does. that doesn’t make him a good person yet and it doesn’t mean it automatically will, but he does love her and that is so beautiful and hopeful because it proves that he is still human, that he is capable of tremendous change. I mean, he has already changed!
I think he loved her right from the start and tried to claim her as his- ignoring the droid that was far more pertinent to his mission, literally picking her up in his arms and carrying her through a battlefield instead of doing anything that made any more sense- but it was a possessive, dark, and one-sided claim, the closest he could come to love in his state but not something which fully deserved the word. When she defeats him at the end of The Force Awakens, she draws a hard and fast line between them- rejecting his possession and his clumsy demand that he be her teacher- as she should- and the reason I still ship it instead of being content with the shutdown as the appropriate move it was is because his reaction to it is not rage at her rejection, but awe of her strength. He sees what she can do, who she is at her very core, sees her light and her virtue even as it falls against him and- there is no bitterness, resentment, or answering wave of hatred. He falls harder, wants her more. And as he falls it changes him.
His demand to be her teacher becomes an offer of love the best he knows how to give it-an offer of power, still dark in many ways but more an offer of equality than dictatorial possession or hubris. The haunting loneliness that was inherent in him even under the rush and clumsiness of his you need a teacher expresses itself more truthfully in The Last Jedi as a desire for partnership. Rey, I want you to join me. His authoritative capture of her unconscious body is transformed into a scene that is almost a dance though it is still colored in violence, a dance where they fight with and for each other. He no longer merely wants her to be his- he wants her to be herself with him. His beseeching of Snoke that he be allowed to keep her- as his student, as his companion, as anything as long as she’s his- becomes the literal bisection of Snoke because the loyalty he once gave him dissolved in an instant when he sees how he treats Rey. Years of misplaced reverence and awe and the endless struggle to gain the approval of someone utterly unworthy of his devotion evaporated because if there is one truth he knows, it is that Rey is precious. The struggle for the light saber between them in the snow becomes the free gift of it as he gives her back her weapon, frees her from the prison of Snoke’s power, and asks her to stand with him as his partner and his equal, as someone he will protect and defend and love with everything in him.
Until. Until it reverts to a struggle for the lightsaber. Until he runs up against the fact that he has nothing to offer her but himself and, unable to see a way where that is enough, he cloaks his need in an offer of power. To rule, just the two of them, over everything. Until he runs up against the fact that he loves her and only her, that he has made no peace with anyone in the galaxy except her and until he runs up against the fact that isolation from the world cannot be the bedrock of a home and if he tried to make it one, only destruction would follow.
Rey loves him, too. I believe that. But she knows that what he asks will hurt not only the people she loves but them as well and so she rejects and runs because she has to. But she also doesn’t kill him, closes the door when she must, but waits and hopes for him because she wants to. And I don’t know how anyone could not want to see Ben go the final distance, change fully and finally, make it to the other side of his crimes and darkness and so into her heart, arms, and life. Because he’s come so far from where he once was and because that is where he belongs and because he knew that from the very beginning.
Kylo Ren loves Rey and thinks Ben Solo is a pathetic shadow who should be eliminated, but he can’t do so
Rey loves Ben Solo, but she hates Kylo Ren.
At this point, it would have been very bad for them to enter a relationship, but there is potential for things to turn around, and it’s likely they will.
“Parental love is sexual. Children practise on their parents. Girls will flirt outrageously with their fathers because they are practising. But we should know that that is practice. Boys will flirt outrageously with their mothers in a different way.”
“Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons has sparked outrage by suggesting that same sex marriage could lead to incest between fathers and sons, fearing it will “debase” marital law.In an interview with the Huffington Post the 64-year-old actor, who stated that he didn’t “have a strong feeling either way” on the subject, mused: “Could a father not marry his son?”When the interviewer reminded Irons about incest laws, the actor continued: “It’s not incest between men,” adding: “Incest is there to protect us from inbreeding, but men don’t breed”.“ ( x )
“It is not the first time Irons has made controversial remarks during an interview. In February he revealed that as a young actor he had to fend off the advances of older men and defended an earlier interview in the Radio Times in which he said “any woman worth her salt can deal with [being patted on the bottom].”Speaking to the Times newspaper, Irons claimed his remarks about bottom patting were “misquoted”, explaining: “I love touching. I always touch people. I don’t think I said ‘bottom’ [in the Radio Times interview] but of course I was misquoted. Basically, I said that any self-respecting woman would tell you to f*** off [if she minded].”
“Paedophilia should be treated as a disease, he says in a BBC interview to be screened next week. But it must also be recognised that children are attractive and that parental love has a “sexual” element.
“It is very difficult because children under 16 are immensely attractive,” he says. “Any father will tell you. I think our children have to be protected. But I don’t think we need to have hysteria.”
Irons, 56, made the remarks when asked about his portrayal of Humbert Humbert, the lecturer who falls for a young girl in the film of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita. When the film came out in 1998, he suggested that child abuse did not always ruin the life of the victim.”
…did he not realise that he would receive IMMENSE backlash when he said things like this?
Like if you’re going to be a homophobic pedo you could at least not reveal that to the entire world could you? Isn’t the point of being evil to NOT LET PEOPLE KNOW that you’re evil?!
you know how many gay men had to fucking die for them to start making free condoms readily available?? fuck y’all for doing exactly what u always bitch about men doing and making this all about yourselves instead of just making a separate fucking post about wanting free tampons
(cont.) also yes, it is not an oppression contest. But have you considered the fact that what women face is a million times worse than what men face? For example in many countries they have special provisions for the poor because they are disadvantaged. its not that the governments are ignoring the rich? they know that rich people dont need as much help as poor do. same in the case of men and women. yes men go through a lot of stuff but also they have a huge advantage over women.
when women on tumblr say “i hate men” or “men are trash” do you think they punch them in the face when they see them or something? No. This whole men is trash conversation started so that men know what it is like when women are catcalled or bullied online. however you dont see any women complaining about every rap song calling women a bitch or a whore right? because women are so used to being treated like trash irl.
nobody is declining the fact that men can be victims. however, the perpetrators, in cases where men are victims, are almost all men. if you can generalise muslims as being a problem because of terrorism or love jihad, why cant you generalise men as being problematic? I know why. Because you are those types of girls who go all like “im not like other girls” just to get attention lol.
Firstly people in the gulf are anti expat towards both men and women. I, as well as my girl classmates, had been granted equal opportunities as the boys in my school and no one aside from little children have said that “girls go to college to get some knowledge/boys go to school to be a fool” or “You can’t wear pink you’re a boy!!!”. Kuwait and Dubai, compared to Saudi Arabia, are much better places to be in. I’ve felt the safest in Kuwait and so have my friends.
Secondly, America is not the same as the rest of the world, FYI. The posts I’ve reblogged so far are largely related to America and women in USA have far more rights and acts for protection when compared to the rest of the world. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t misogynists out there, but it’s not in general an alarming situation. No one’s pressurizing you to get married bc omg what will your relatives say? No one’s trying to break up your marriage because the woman you married is of a lower caste than you, and then hiding your kid away for 3-4 years because of her inter caste status in the bloody States.
And Bullshit. There are women who are perpetrators of rape and domestic abuse. The Dillon incident don’t ring any bells for you? Women are not angels, and not all women are victims.
Thirdly, tumblr is happy saying men are trash under the pretext of a joke, alongside making jokes about male rape and abuse and filing it under “muh patriarchy” and “omg it’s a joke not all women”. No one would dare joke about female rape and abuse because only scum would do that. Tumblr is not the ideal role model for feminism.
And FYI, muslims are not the problem. I do not have a fucking problem with muslims. I grew up with muslims, Some of my school friends and family friends are muslims. The teachers who taught me arabic are muslim.
My problem is with Islam, which is anti feminist and against everything I stand for. Girls as young as 6 (and from what @someoneintheshadow456 told me, as young as 1) are wearing the frigging Hijab here in Kerala, which makes no fucking sense?? What’s so sexualizing about a young girl’s body?! My feelings are irrelevant if they wish to wear it out of their free will. But not this. This I can’t agree with. That’s why I’m against Love Jihad as well.
Chal, if that helps anon kutti sleep at night, you can assume whatever the hell you want about me. If I wanted attention, I would have gone outside.
(Also from what I read, guy gamers in general are more concerned about how well the girl gamer is playing. Some of you should talk to actual men. Good luck.)
Anon, I also live in India, the same region as Lemonade. We both have seen similar things and experiences. I can attest that most of the oppression against women in India isn’t done by men, it’s done by other women.
Most of the abuses in marriages I’ve seen are perpetuated by the mother in law and the husband just allows it to happen. Most of the time female infanticide is done at the behest of the mother in law, not the husband.
I was a girl gamer and geek in school, who bullied me for it? Not men. Girls my age. Who said I was “not acting like a normal girl” and that “I wouldn’t get a husband” if I was into video games and anime. Well good thing most men don’t give a damn and are too busy worrying about themselves to care if a girl plays games.
Daughters are abused by their mothers more than their fathers, who usually are more neglectful than abusive. Even the hijab example and Islam, it’s usually forced upon by the mother and FGM is almost always performed by female relatives. Honour killings are usually the woman’s idea even if the man does it. Forced marriages are often arranged by the mother, not the father.
All my life women have told me that men are dangerous and will want to rape me and that as a woman I have to fear always. However it was all a lie, and left me open to abuse from girls throughout my life.
When I was in elementary school, girls bullied me for having breasts and for having periods. I was called names and groped in the changing room, I had my bra strap snapped in the classroom. Girls called me “metal mouth” for having braces, they teased me for having pimples, they called me ugly and teased me for my hair.
When I went to the teacher for this, she dismissed them and told me not to take it seriously because “They’re just girls. Girls can’t do anything.”
In high school, my friend group conspired with my ex boyfriend so that he could molest me at a birthday party while they laughed and watched. I told the school about it.
My ex was punished, but my friends however got away scott free even though it was their idea to begin with.
When I was in college, I was raped by my best friend, a girl. I got little to no sympathy and was told “at least you’re still a virgin” because a girl did it to me. When I went to Tumblr to express my trauma, feminists didn’t help me. They told me to feel sorry for my rapist and that men were really at fault because “patriarchy.”
Women oppressing women is something that goes on all the time. And nobody even cares about it and the victims are dismissed and mocked. If you were truly a feminist, you would do something about this.
But most feminists aren’t pro women. They’re anti men.
Tumblr:is insanely notoriously lax in enforcing their own rules regarding harassment, violation of privacy, spambots, and child porn
US Government:hey man there’s like, 100 accounts we THINK are linked to this Russian org-
Tumblr: ok, got it [annhilates about 100 accounts in like 2 seconds and has a whole press release about it] ok, all done. now we will never have to do anything ever again
NCMEC: Uhhhhh. There’s. There’s a lot of child pornography here. A lot that hasn’t been entered into our database like we’ve asked you to.
Google and Apple: What the fuck? The mobile app’s off our store front, this is disgusting.
Tumblr: OH FUCK UHHHHHH. UH. [Makes an automated process to delete the offending blogs along with the spambots.] OK OK GOOD GOOD THAT SHOULD BE FINE- [The automated process starts deleting EVERYONE] -SHIT. SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT.
Tumblr Users: hey, can you delete this person that’s been threatening to kill me?
If you look back on every single bestselling book ever printed, the chances are that most, if not all of them, contain sub-plots.
A sub-plot is part of a book that develops separately from the main story, and it can serve as a tool that extends the word count and adds interest and depth into the narrative.
Sub-plots are key to making your novel a success, and, although they aren’t necessary for shorter works, are an essential aspect of story writing in general.
However, sub-plots can be difficult to weave into the main plot, so here are a few tips on how to incorporate sub-plots into your writing.
1. Know Your Kinds of Sub-Plots and Figure Out Which is Best For Your Story
Sub-plots are more common than you think, and not all of them extend for many chapters at a time.
A sub-plot doesn’t have to be one of the side characters completely venturing off from the main group to struggle with their own demons or a side quest that takes up a quarter of the book. Small things can make a big difference, and there are many of these small things that exist in literature that we completely skip over when it comes to searching for sub-plots.
Character Arcs
Character arcs are the most common sub-plot.
They show a change in a dynamic character’s physical, mental, emotional, social, or spiritual outlook, and this evolution is a subtle thing that should definitely be incorporated so that the readers can watch their favorite characters grow and develop as people.
For example, let’s say that this guy named Bob doesn’t like his partner Jerry, but the two of them had to team up to defeat the big bad.
While the main plot involves the two of them brainstorming and executing their plans to take the big bad down, the sub-plot could involve the two getting to know each other and becoming friends, perhaps even something more than that.
This brings me to the second most common sub-plot:
Romance
Romance can bolster the reader’s interest; not only do they want to know if the hero beats the big bad guy, they also want to know if she ends up with her love interest in the end or if the warfare and strife will keep them apart.
Like character arcs, romance occurs simultaneously with the main plot and sometimes even influences it.
Side-Quests
There are two types of side-quest sub-plots, the hurtles and the detours.
Hurdle Sub-Plots
Hurdle sub-plots are usually complex and can take a few chapters to resolve. Their main purpose is to put a barrier, or hurdle, between the hero and the resolution of the main plot. They boost word count, so be careful when using hurdle sub-plots in excess.
Think of it like a video game.
You have to get into the tower of a fortress to defeat the boss monster.
However, there’s no direct way to get there; the main door is locked and needs to have three power sources to open it, so you have to travel through a monster-infested maze and complete all of these puzzles to get each power source and unlock the main door.
Only, when you open the main door, you realize that the bridge is up and you have to find a way to lower it down and so forth.
Detour Sub-Plot
Detour sub-plots are a complete break away from the main plot. They involve characters steering away from their main goal to do something else, and they, too, boost word count, so be careful not too use these too much.
Taking the video game example again.
You have to get to that previously mentioned fortress and are on your way when you realize there is an old woman who has lost her cattle and doesn’t know what to do.
Deciding the fortress can wait, you spend harrowing hours rounding up all of the cows and steering them back into their pen for the woman.
Overjoyed, the woman reveals herself to be a witch and gives you a magical potion that will help you win the fight against the big bad later.
**ONLY USE DETOUR SUB-PLOTS IF THE OUTCOME HELPS AID THE PROTAGONISTS IN THE MAIN PLOT**
If they’d just herded all of the cows for no reason and nothing in return, sure it would be nice of them but it would be a complete waste of their and the readers’ time!
2. Make Sure Not to Introduce or Resolve Your Sub-Plots Too Abruptly
This goes for all sub-plots. Just like main plots, they can’t be introduced and resolved with a snap of your fingers; they’re a tool that can easily be misused if placed into inexperienced hands.
Each sub-plot needs their own arc and should be outlined just like how you outlined your main plot.
You could use my methods suggested in the linked post, or you could use the classic witch’s hat model if you feel that’s easier for something that’s less important than your main storyline.
3. Don’t Push It
If you don’t think your story needs a sub-plot, don’t add a sub-plot! Unneeded sub-plots can clutter up your narrative and make it unnecessarily winding and long.
You don’t have to take what I’m saying to heart ever!
It’s your story, you write it how you think it should be written, and no one can tell you otherwise!
Turbo from Ralph is good and unexpected villian too and with good subtle hints as well.
Thisthisthisthisthis
You can’t just make a character start being evil with no explanation or foreshadowing or any character hints whatsoever. It makes the viewer feel cheated.
King Candy was already a good villain to begin with, coming off more as a well-intentioned extremist. He gave Ralph what he wanted up front with no strings attached, and then convinced him that doing something bad was indeed for the greater good, then came the twist that he was lying the whole time.
Revealing the fact that he has a secret identity was the icing on the cake.
“Oh but there’s this freeze-frame moment he looks a tad sinister during Love is An Open Door” that doesn’t mean anything when you still build him up to be a good person. He’s shown handing out blankets to the freezing cold peasants while Anna’s away saving her sister.
I think that Han’s could have done better. However, there were a few subtle hints…
In general, In Love is An Open Door, he and Anna didn’t really sing together even though it was a duet. Disney takes their song’s pretty seriously, and throughout the song, it isn’t the freeze-frame bonus, it’s the fact that Han’s is effectively just following Anna’s lead and copying what she’s doing. The actors also weren’t people who would really sing a duet together due to their different vocal tendencies.
Someone did an analysis over the song and how it foreshadowed Han’s villainy or at least not being in as sync with Anna as he says that he is.
Also gloves in media is a sign of deceit and Hans is the only one who wears gloves in the movie all the time.
