literally every antifujo i’ve seen is a minor (usually 14-15) holy shit

rottenboysclub:

There are a fair number of older antifujos who are usually one of the following:

1. Homophobic misogynistic men. This is the most common type you’ll see in animanga fandom as a whole, and where the term ‘fujoshi’ originally came from. Basically they hate women and they hate reading about mxm pairings, so they deride any woman (or man) into slash, and slash in general.

2. TERFs, SWERFs, transphobes and transmisogynists. They claim that ‘fujoshi’ means “straight females who fetishize gay male relationships” – by which they mean trans mlm, and wield it as an insult towards them. The current discourse here on tumblr was started by this type, hence the reason I call this the ‘TERF definition’ of fujoshi.

3. Trans men who are unaware that the current anti-fujo discourse was started by TERFs specifically as an anti-trans dogwhistle. They assume that the whole “straight females fetishizing gay male relationships” is referring to straight women harassing gay men, and mistakenly believe that’s what fujoshi means.

4. Fujoshi who don’t realise that they’re fujoshi. Women who read / write slash, and have mxm pairings, but are going through a “not like other girls” phase and insisting they’re not fujoshi because they only ship “pure” ships.

Only the first type is common in Japanese fandom – the others are US-centric and related to the antifujo discourse here on tumblr.

5. Former Fujos who are ashamed of their younger days because “anything I liked when I was 10-17 years old is cringe and stupid so in order to be ‘adult’ I have to violently hate all those things”

I’ve seen THAT type as well and they tend to be the ones who take it so personally

If antis use those stamps to justify “gross fujoshi behavior” they sure are totally forgetting how much Actual Homophobia was rampant online and fueling some of those hyper-sexual reactions. I distinctly remember getting flammed to hell for just drawing a pair of guys kissing, called a gross pervert, etc. Of COURSE I leaned into it when I was a teenager. Like oh shit it’s almost like there’s usually a CONTEXT for why people create explicit works!

it’s giving me whiplash to have the anti-yaoi, anti-fujoshi crowd be crying about fujoshi being homophobes when not that long ago the positions were completely reversed.

Modern anti-fujoshi have a very….. short perspective on this issue, because when I first read BL manga, the general public opinion on gay romance and gay erotica was that it was gross, weird, sinful, and dirty because it was gay. That was it – straight manga that also had tropes of incest, rape, underage pairings, all of that shit was fine. girls who read that kind of shojo manga were normal. fujoshi were freaks because they read the same stuff, but with (shudder) gay men. Anti-fujoshi thought BL was bad because it was gay, and fujoshi were gross and kinky because they liked it.

Some fujoshi responded by reasonably explaining to the homophobes that actually, gay people aren’t gross or weird. and when that inevitably failed, most just went “fine, fuck you. You think it’s gross, weird, sinful and dirty, fine – I like it anyways. Suck it.” fujoshi did a lot of the work of normalizing slash ships on the internet by putting gay content everywhere, all the time, and refusing to be ashamed. the culture was far from perfect, but it was also much less homophobic than fandom at large. which is why so many queer millennials ended up in the fujoshi crowds, if not necessarily using the term for themselves.

fujoshi: telling homophobes to fuck off since before these kids were born, probably

Antis act like they’ve had no political awareness from before maybe 2015, so at this point I just assume that the vast majority of them are actually that young, and really, that’s being kind to them. The only other option is that they’re homophobic, misogynistic adults who know exactly what they’re doing!

I think the anti fujo crowd may also be FORMER fujos who are cringing at their past behaviour. They think they acted stupidly when they were young and so they have formed a backlash against it now.

That may explain why they take it so personally.

So my little post blew up far more than I expected it to.

I thought I’d get a few disgruntled replies and some likes but this is something else. Gotta admit that I’m pretty impressed for what it’s worth. I would like to respond to each and every one of these, erm, passionate responses but we’d be hear all century if we’re lucky.

What I would like to touch on is a sort of commonality among a good chunk of them. This narrative, so to speak, about how those vocally advocating for feminism, LGBT+ and racial representation are somehow not part of the larger geek culture period.

To clarify, it’s how these people in particular are seeking to “take over” geek culture by “making it all for them” supposedly without actually caring about what they’re criticizing at best or attacking at worst. The way some describe it, you’d think this was an alien invasion.

Am I denying that these sorts of people aren’t out there? Um, no. There have always been “outsiders” trying to cast geeks and nerds as responsible for everything awful ever. Soccer Mom, Politicians, college students with half-baked ideas for their barely drafted essays.

The thing is… none of these would actually gain any traction period if there weren’t those among geeks and nerds who could relate, those who have had genuine grievances for quite sometime but felt compelled to keep to themselves. So what changed?

Social Media. Specifically Twitter and, you guessed it, Tumblr. More people can forward about their experiences and feelings in regards to things society would much prefer to sweep under the rug, practically coming out in droves. Among those were feelings of alienation in, that’s right, Geek Culture.

Like society, geeks and nerds have grown to be more accepting of those who aren’t white or straight or male. Also like society, there is still massive room for improvement whether we like to acknowledge it or not and plenty of people want them acknowledged.

Where I’m going with this is that casting those advocating for diversity as largely being “outsiders” or “fake geeks” creates an all too familiar “Us vs. Them” scenario when a great chunk of the “bitching” and “whiny” is coming from inside the house.

Plenty of geeks of various genders and races don’t hold their tongue when it comes to Social Justice while also indulging in things like Star Wars, Anime and other things filled to the bring with things they rally against. People are free to critique what they’re passionate about.

What matters is HOW they go about and, YES, plenty go about it poorly. The RWDE of RWBY seem to have this toxic relationship with the web series itself and I don’t even need to bring up how the Steven Universe or Voltron fandom are redefining the art of discourse.

Many will put others on the spot in regards to, say, diversity in fiction and presume the worse of those who speak ill of it however small or big. Yet to act like this is because we’re being invaded by those outside of Geek Culture seems to ignore the bigger picture here.

I don’t blame anybody for wanting to indulge in nerdy stuff and escape the dumpster fire that is our world. However, blaming so much of this one those who are “not one of us” barely solves the problem and ignores so many others. We are better than this. Far better.

Dude, you’re missing the part where people who mocked and bullied us years before are now pretending to be experts in our passions despite their ignorance being abundantly clear, and anyone who says otherwise or corrects them on their bullshit is labeled a bigot.

Don’t forget the part where they actively erase the past history of minority acceptance within geek culture to wrongfully take credit for making things more “inclusive” (while not-so-secretly abusing minorities who call them out on their false narrative).

And the best of all, shippers and fetishists who fool themselves and other idiots into thinking they’re activists when they doxx and harass fans and content creators for not validating their ships and headcanons, no matter how blatantly off base and never-ever-going-to-happen they are.

It’s called “Hobby Gentrification” for a reason dude. And the PoC and LGBT people who were here before are pissed off more than anyone else, because these douchebags speak over us and act like they speak FOR US and use as shields to hide from criticism while dropping all pretense to shit on us as hard as any Alt Rightist once we say shit they don’t like.

Matt, let me be clear:

People try to call Trekkies racist sexists. You know, the fans of the show that aired the first interracial kiss and had diversity unmatched by shows even today.

People tried to call Stan Lee a racist homophobe. The same man who made the first black superhero in Black Panther and showed the first gay marriage in comic book history.

People tried to call MHA sexist. You know, the same manga that regularly portrays the female characters just as competent as the male characters.

Or maybe I should move things a little closer to home?

Would you say that Miles Luna deserves to be fired or he’s a shit writer for looking white? Or how about because he’s a man and surely a man can’t write women? Or that Illa is homophobic because she was portrayed as a villain? Or that he surely can’t understand racism despite being part Mexican?

If you answer anyway other than ‘yes’: then how you can call these people like yourself? How can you say ‘Yes, these people actually care about the media in question and won’t just use it like a Buffalo Bill flesh suit.’

I would also go onto show say that the people you supposedly think are fellows include Dudeblade who regularly makes it his job to be as racist and sexist as possible, Sokumotanaka who thinks that the show is only seen as good because it’s made by white people, goth-albino-angel who outright said the writers are shit because they are men from texas. These are the people you are defending. And probably the ONLY people you are defending because aside from them and the rest of RWDE, I can’t name a single person demanding diversity or the such in the fandom.

The thing is: So many of the people crying for these things care only for themselves. All of this is just a means to an end, a way to dictate and control what people can and cannot do. It also doesn’t help that these people are the biggest bigots I have ever met in my life. Never before have I seen someone condemn an entire half of the political spectrum to the point of demanding they all die. Never before I have met someone who’d talk about the suicide rate of LGBT people as a way of controlling others then proceed to suicide bait an LGBT person all while acting like the victim. Never before I have seen someone say that writers are only treated as good because of their race and get applause for it. Never before have I seen someone be an outright, textbook definition of ‘bigot’ and get support for it. Never before until I met these people.

And this is all from a VERY limited experience. If I was an active comic, gaming and anime fan, I’d probably have more examples to talk about.

This is why I can say without doubt they don’t care. Because they had every chance to prove otherwise and never did.

Honestly shout out to people with anxiety and panic disorders, y’all don’t get enough recognition for your hard work. Pushing through your body’s instinct to fight/flee/freeze at the slightest worry is a whole new level of strength. You’re battling almost everyday against a fast-acting animalistic response that humans have been experiencing since the dawn of time, a response that is literally designed to take full control of your actions away from you. That takes so much courage and perseverance. You’re strong as fuck.

It’s so hurtful to see antis be so.. dumb

I… have a bone to pick with Geek Culture(TM).

Specifically with the way many with it vilifies Feminism, LGBT+ inclusion and diversity overall. If there’s even a meager challenge to the status quo, you can be sure so many will be keen to kick up a fuss.

Many will use stock phrases that go along the lines of, “Can we not have XYZ politics in our entertainment?” whenever there’s some statement about what, say, an upcoming show is all about.

As though there’s some sort of unspoken rule about what the media we consume should or should not depict. As though that isn’t advocating for censorship in and of itself.

I would love to discuss how there are indeed pitfall when it comes to hiring based on gender or race specifically. I would love to discuss how focusing on diversity in your work may lead to tunnel vision when it come to storytelling and characterization.

Yet there’s this overwhelming vibe that broadcasts, “This is not up for discussion so shut up and enjoy the escapism.” As though they’d rather bury their heads in the sand.

What makes us any better than the SJWs we regularly scorn?

In one word:

Tokenism.

These people do not care about true diversity, diversity of thought or diversity of opinions or diversity of personality. They just want a black guy or a gay lady and that’s ALL they care about.

Remember Illa? Remember how in the fandom, she is almost completely defined as ‘the gay lizard’ despite things like her conflict between her trauma and morality, her personal interactions with Blake, the reaction she has to how the world treated her and so much more was more consequential and more related to her character than her being gay? Yeah, taht’s the issue. These people only care about something vapid and meaningless and the people who do this immoral shit usually ARE vapid and meaningless.

And eventually, people are just gonna have a character be gay or be black…and that’s it. No actual personality. No actual struggles. Nothing to denoute them as an actual person: they’re just the Minority TM because it’s easy, lazy and gets them money.

SO i’d prefer to AVOID this thank you very much.
