How to Study Math
📌Read the textbook beforehand. It is not important to actually understand it this time around. The goal is to make connections during the actual lecture.
📌Go to class. When you are absent, make up your work as soon as you possibly can. Never allow yourself to fall behind. That is one of the easiest ways to screw up in math.
📌Ask questions. Also, listen to others when they ask questions. You can always learn from them, too. If you are shy or have anxiety and you would rather not speak up, write down your questions in the margins of your notes and ask them privately to your teacher after class or via email.
📌Show all of your work. You’ve heard it a thousand times because it is important. Your teacher will appreciate this habit.
📌Check all of your work. During sophomore year I screwed up a geometry problem completely because I said 7×2 was 16. You’d be surprised at the stupid mistakes you’ll make when you’re tired and sad.
📌Practice extra. This is so important! Cover the answers from your homework and notes and rework the problems to quiz yourself.
📌Reviewing is sooo important, kids! The easiest way to review is by rewriting your notes every day before doing your homework. Make them look pretty and use all sorts of colors. Add annotations from the textbook. Basically make a “masterpost” for the subject material. Reviewing a little bit every day is much more effective than cramming for hours.
📌Never procrastinate. Do all of your homework while it is fresh in your mind. One of my biggest mistakes in my early years of high school was procrastinating until I forgot everything and it was too late to ask questions.
📌Make an index or list of key concepts and important formulas. Paraphrase everything into a way that makes sense for you. I’d suggest starting a new list for every unit, keeping each one on file to study during midterm and final exam seasons.
IMPORTANT!
Another one I figured out
Work out one example of each type and write in words next to the working what is happening
For example system of equations when you do like this:
A: x+2y=10
B: 3x+y=15
B -> y=15-3x
B -> A: x + 2(15-3x) = 10
Write on the side in words “solve b for y” and “substitute b into a” for the corresponding steps. This method has helped me personally.
