Reasons I dislike the LGBT flag with the brown and black stripes:
- It implies nonwhite ethnicities aren’t inherently a part of the LGBT community, or that being nonwhite is inherently queer. Neither of which are true, of course, and we can be inclusive without giving “brown people” separate colors.
- It looks bad. No, seriously it does. Neutral tones thrown on top of a literal rainbow? Are you kidding me? It is objectively going to clash.
- The design was made just after the death of the original creator of the rainbow flag, which itself feels kind of shitty and underhanded.
More reasons:
- Often posted as a virtue signal or because people think they’re ‘supposed to’ post it.
- Implies that nonwhite races aren’t just not inherently LGBT+, but are an afterthought. Nonwhite people (i.e., the black transgender women in the Stonewall riot) have always been part of the community.
- Implies that there is a concrete or definite connection between race and sexuality. There isn’t. So there’s no point in tacking these extra stripes onto the flag.
- Has weird tones of “let’s put nonwhite people on a pedestal”. If we’re going to bring race into this, why not add some lighter stripes, too? Olive tones, tan, peach? Oh, right.. it’s because that’s ~whitewashing~ and ~white people suck~. Your skin color doesn’t mean you deserve something that others don’t.
- Also has some weird guilt factor for nonwhite LGBT+ people who don’t use it or don’t like it. They don’t have to participate in every single social justice “power move uwu” just because they’re nonwhite.
And I’m fucking shocked that we haven’t seen some bullshit version of the transgender flag with a black and brownstripe slapped onto it.
-K
One more reason:
- Each of the colored stripes has a symbolic meaning (life, healing, nature, etc). You’re gonna slap on two stripes that literally just mean ‘brown people’ and ‘black people’?
One more BIG ass reason:
- There already WAS a black stripe, which signified the people lost due to AIDS. As in, someone deadass appropriated a stripe used to honor the dead and made it a race thing.
This point in particular pisses me off.
It also implies that being black or brown inherently makes you LGBT+…
Despite the absolutely disgusting amounts of LGBT+-phobia in black and POC communities
Also, race isn’t a sexuality. Race is race. Adding race to a flag about sexual orientation doesn’t make any fucking sense.
Mmhm, I was going to mention that but I think I was making it too long winded and probably wording it poorly so I just left the post as is. But yeah, the flag is about sexuality and is suppose to be a fucking rainbow, adding the ugly stripes literally makes no sense at all. Its ROYGBIV not ROYGBBBIV.
also the way it was handled too. Imagine interrupting a gay pride parade because you wanted to add brown and black to the thing, they could’ve done it way more respectively.
