the internet sucks because social justice language that serves an actual purpose is constantly getting bastardized and watered down because eternally online idiot dickheads have managed to appellate it and apply it to whip up that online social justice crowd to go after people that haven’t really done anything wrong in the greater scheme of things but just got into a petty dispute on a forum a decade ago

people can spin entire elaborate fake moral narratives about shit when the core issue isn’t even racism or abuse or whatever these types say it’s about but at the core is just cause they don’t like them or cause they want them to get fucked over by the twitter do ya thang environment that’s been created

nobody gives a shit if you just say “I don’t like X cause they said I was wrong and made me feel bad”

BUT change some verbiage around, and say it like “X said I was wrong and this is why this is abusive” you get the pitchforks and torches crowd

this is, i feel, the entire thing around mansplaining cause I’ll be honest?

to be real?

I think mansplaining actually does exist, but in very very limited qualities.

but now these days any power tripping person online can call any case of an obvious male (or mistaken male/someone the speaker SAYS is male) contradicting someone or even politely disagreeing with them as mansplaining, when it was originally a term that applied to very specific cases of men being condescending and talking down to (mostly) women, spurred from chauvinistic and sexist attitudes

it has been warped to the point where everything can be framed as mansplaining or misogyny when you say something negative or critical about a woman or someone claiming to be a woman or someone of one of those non mainstream gender identities

it’s used less as a specific behavior to recognize and more used as a target to paint on someone’s back

this is why everything is some bizarre moral failing these days in fandoms and whatever else, i feel, ESPECIALLY on this website, though twitter and every other online environment got it now too to a lesser extent

and this has happened to so many actual useful terms like “triggering” “emotional labor” “gaslighting” “abuse”

things that are steeped in behavior sciences, social sciences, outside the internet activism and therapy are being coopted by people that don’t understand the words, the context of their usage, underlying terminology or when they’re used

folks like that think “haha i have a handy gotcha for the people that are sending me nasty anons on my steven universe fan blog”

this is bad

i mean, this really screws over people that go through abuse or have ptsd from actual real life offline shit and trivializes the fuck out of those terms

and if you don’t see the problem with that, damn son, i feel bad for you

He’s right. Hell, they’ve taken just about anything in jargon to mean what they want, even if that jargon was literally made for a special case that doesn’t even apply to what they’re using it for.

Don’t get me started on the “spoons theory”. It was invented by a woman with lupus, as a simple analogy to help healthy, non-disabled people understand the difficulty and exhaustion of daily life with a chronic illness or disability. It specifically refers to health conditions that are hard to manage and sap your energy. However, the Tumblrites latched onto it and began applying it to every health condition; just claim you “don’t have the spoons for this”, and you have an automatic out for any discussion you don’t like or situation you don’t want to confront.

OOOOOOH do I get to mention, as somebody with PTSD, how much I hate how trigger was bastardized, and how nobody on this hellsite who used it as the above point (ie bastardized something that was extremely specific) will take fucking responsibility (then again expecting late Millenials and Gen-Z to do that is like pulling teeth) and just go, it was made to make fun of PTSD victims. It’s like no Jane, it was to make fun of your 13 year-old self saying stupid ass shit like you were triggered by blue in a post on a goddamn website that is blue.

The same thing happened to pedophile. What once meant “adult molesting minors” now means “anime fan”, “16 and 19 year old”, “man in the vicinity of children”, “someone who likes shows with kids in them”

So now when someone calls someone a pedophile, we never know if they mean someone who is a danger to society or someone whose tastes are different from theirs.
