so many gay/lesbian people hate being called queer because it waters down our sexuality. it leaves them up for debate. it feels like people are scared of the confirmation of “lesbian” or “gay”. if a woman is a lesbian, it means she has no attraction to men whatsoever. if she is “queer”, well then it’s “fluid” and open to interpretation. same for gay men. it’s not that we’re mean gays who “hate inclusivity”. it’s that our sexualities aren’t fluid. my sexuality is a brick that i’d throw at anyone who calls me queer. going out of your way to call gay men and/or lesbians queer instead of just saying gay/lesbian is homophobic, plain and simple.

Queer is still used as a slur in my country. My grandparents use it.

It’s still used in North America too. I don’t get where anyone got the idea it’s not used as a slur anymore because it’s just not true.

It depends on the area where you live. In my area in North America, it isn’t a slur, but does still make some LGBT+ people uncomfortable.

Trust me, even in San Francisco, there’s probably homophobes that still call gay people “queers”.

(Not saying you live in San Fran, but just using that as an example)

I can get that. That’s why I’m all for like… Personal choice about it. If someone doesn’t mind being called ‘queer’, that’s cool. But not everyone is up for it and that fact needs to be respected by people.

Also in some countries queer has a connotation like “extremist radical who wants to cause trouble always” which is the connotation queer has in India. Only very extremist, very radical, and most often rich urbanites thinking they’re “woke” groups use it.

You can see why normal Indian LGBT people are very wary of the word. Especially considering that general society already thinks down on us, people like this just make straight people want to go “See! I was right! You’re all degenerate freaks!”
