Honestly, I think the reason media with younger audiences tends to be labeled as “cringe” is because young people approach their interests with an earnest excitement that adults find disquieting and uncomfortable. No, the Proper and Adult way to do things is to be alienated from your own emotions and approach everything with a disaffected irony, because god forbid you have a Genuine Emotion.
Please don’t read the notes on this post, they’ll instantly infect you with Ebola.
I think it’s also adults who were bullied for being fans of things when they were younger, in a twisted way, trying to “protect” kids who are geeks from experiencing harassment for their interests by telling them those things are “cringe.”
Like “don’t be enthusiastic about this, I did the same thing and I was bullied and ostracised. I don’t want the same thing to happen to you. You have to feel closeted about your fandoms to be taken seriously.”
There should be more a push towards teaching people of all ages that bullying someone for their interests isn’t okay. If someone likes something different they aren’t hurting anyone.
