I think their point was that we should keep believing no matter how many times they lie because one time it might be true. Except in this case, someone gets lynched everytime the townsfolk get called.
No their point was that there is a wolf, but because they don’t believe her they get eaten by the wolf, some crazy how. Also they’re not refusing to believe her. Despite obviously being doubtful they’re still giving her a chance to explain what happened. Presumably because they will use that explanation to decide whether or not to believe her. The basic standard: Believe only what you can know to be true, not what other’s tell you is true, a difficult concept to accept, it turns out.
