i remember in 2014 everyone was pointing out how creepy twilight was and how edward was constantly depicted as a stalker and the shit with jacob literally falling in love with a fucking baby and now its 2018 and people are trying to claim twilight was actually good all along and we only hated it bc of misogyny or whatever like… how did y’all get less woke
this is a good post julie
twilight was super bad but it also wasn’t the worst piece of garbage media that we consumed in 2008, and i think that the fact that so many women found engagement with it led to like….this cult of hating twilight. like people got SO ANGRY at twilight for existing and for women liking it in a way that no one did with, say, the bay transformers movies which came out around the same time. so, yeah i think it definitely was Not a good story, but i also think a lot of the backlash to it was the result of misogyny (i was, unfortunately, also one of those anti-twilight people back in the day because of my ~not like other girls~ phase)
Can confirm, i was part of the forum Twilight Sucks and looking back now it was definitely a misogynistic cult that focused on insulting stephenie meyer’s looks and talking about how only ‘stupid’ girls liked it. Only very view times did it talk about what was actually wrong with the books (abuse labeled as romance, child grooming, racism, etc.)
But without the misogyny lense its still a crap book for reasons above and I think we should rebury it. Women deserve a good romance not that abusive creep show.
people hating it for misogynistic reasons doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve hate
Well, looking back on the books it’s obvious that Stephenie Meyer was an idiot who had no idea of how real world things worked (like schools, jobs, applications, cars, money) and was just a really creepy wish fulfillment (her Mary Sue self insert looks exactly like her and gets all the guys and is never called out on the crap she pulls). Not to mention she doesn’t know how to write consistently and her POV was supposed to be first person but she had no idea how teens thought and spoke. She also kept going to third person in her first person POV. Of course people would be upset that something of such horrible quality became such a phenomenon among thirsty housewives and dumb teen girls.
Also, the Transformers movies were universally panned and people knew that they were just fight scenes with robots. No one claimed the films were art or deep. People ironically enjoyed them because the films were just such a mess but at least didn’t pretend to be anything other than a hot mess.
Twilight didn’t receive backlash because of misogyny. Twilight got backlash because it failed in every conceivable way except the box office. Just because something was written by a woman and got negative criticism doesn’t mean it’s misogyny. The criticism was deserved. Now if Meyer had been an amazing writer on par with Hiromu Arakawa of FMA then things would have been different.
