Imagine

I am a woman about the same age as Christine Blasey Ford. I grew up in the same culture as she did; I know women who were assaulted or raped and never said anything about it, and I completely understand their reasons.

Despite my liberal leanings and my being a woman, I have the ability to see multiple viewpoints.

I am able to imagine a world in which Brett Kavanaugh is completely innocent and where the events of these past two weeks have been a terrible miscarriage of justice, a smear campaign designed to play to the “#Metoo” mood of the moment, to achieve political ends. I can imagine a man wrongly accused, a woman seeking to gain personally from a lie.

(Mind you, I don’t believe that is what happened here; Blasey Ford stands to gain nothing from her testimony, and Kavanaugh stands to gain much if he claims that she is a liar.)

Now I ask you, my friends – despite your conservative leanings and your possibly being men – to play the “imagine” game, too:

Imagine that Blasey Ford is telling the truth, and Kavanaugh is lying. Imagine women the world over watching Blasey Ford tell her story after 36 years. Imagine them reading the parade of comments that villify Blasey Ford, call her names. Imagine them watching the President of the United States mock her publicly. Imagine that Kavanaugh not only fails to lose his good standing, but is elevated to a position of great power that he will hold for decades.

Imagine that your daughter is the next woman assaulted.

Imagine how long she will hold her tongue.

I have no idea if he’s innocent or guilty.

I do, however, think it’s wrong to say she has no reason to lie. Political ideology is a powerful motivation. So is fame, and self-righteousness. From here she could write a book, or run for office in a very blue state. She could also have been paid. There are many very plausible reasons for Ford to have lied. Again, IDK if she did, but this idea that she had no reason is absurd to me.

OP, why don’t your viewpoints seem to include the men and boys who see yet another man getting railroaded and demonized on an unverifiable accusation? About the women who worry that their brothers, sons, fathers, boyfriends, husbands get accused, and both the accused and the woman herself get death threats?

What about the women who see this three ring circus and decide it’s a good idea to sling around unverifiable accusations that ruin – or maybe even end – lives?

Why is it wrong for Trump to mock Ford, but not for zillions of people to mock Kavanaugh for being upset, including SNL?

Why should Kavanaugh lose his good standing for something nobody can prove even happened?

And why aren’t you blaming the Democrats who backed this extremely public farce for political reasons?

Also, nothing you’ve asked us to imagine would change if Ford was lying or incorrect, aside from “imagine she’s telling the truth”. Because your hypotheticals are all about perception, not reality.

Oh, and the GoFundMes for Ford made over $700,000 before they stopped disclosing. Five bucks says she writes a book.

Twenty big fat Samoans says it will be a New York Time’s “best seller” for at least a week.

I would hope my daughter would learn that hiding something for 35 years and not accusing her attacker until all evidence is gone might be a bad idea.

>let’s play the imagine game

I don’t have to use my imagination for things that actually happened, OP.

Innocent until proven guilty. But if he’s proven guilty, he deserves everything he gets.

But that’s just it. IF.
