The feminist analysis that always gets me is Sleeping Beauty. They always get their panties in a twist about how passive Aurora is while ignoring that Maleficent is the baddest bitch and ignoring that the fairies are the ones who drive and deal with the conflict, Phillip would’ve died without them. And then Maleficent comes along and everyone praises how feminist it is despite the fact they made Maleficent evil because of a man and neutered the fairies, denying them of their original agency.
They’ll be ready to talk about how feminist and progressive something is when they like it but they ignore the same shit if they feel like they can criticize it or get points for being ~~such a woke~~ feminist.
Like I even thought of a way to FIX the Maleficent movie because it was such a mess.
1. Make it so there was always an ongoing war between fairies and humans. Like, humans plundered the fairy kingdom for riches, fairies used their spells to put curses on humans, etc.
2. Maleficent’s name wasn’t always Maleficent, it was something else, she changed her name after turning evil
3. The three fairies and Maleficent used to be friends, which gives them a history with her, and they have distinct personalities like they did in the original movie
4. The romance with King Stephan will still be there, but it will not be THE reason she turned evil. And King Stephan was always royalty instead of a commoner who turned royalty. He won’t be a crazy jerk, it will be his father who is the crazy jerk.
5. Maleficent’s primary reason for turning evil will be finding out that her parents were killed by Stephan’s parents (but she doesn’t know that it was her parents who started the conflict). Her wings are chopped off because she lost a battle against King Stephan’s dad. So she becomes evil to protect the fairy kingdom from the evil of humans.
6. She wants to kill Aurora because she assumes that she will continue the line of evil caused by humanity. So her curse will be the same as the original movie and it’s the three fairies who change it.
7. Philip and Aurora were childhood friends to make up for the no chemistry they had in the other movies, and Philip is in on the secret with the three fairies. Plus Aurora already knows about it too, this takes out needless drama.
8. Most importantly MALEFICENT STAYS EVIL THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE, she will have moments of humanity and conflict, but she will STILL BE EVIL. OH AND SHE WILL ALSO HAVE A DRAGON FORM TOO.
