reminder that the same people who created this saying:
also created this one:
… to defend the group’s practice of outing closeted people against their will.
How the fuck is that encouraging to force lgbtq people to get outed?
i don’t know what “encouraging to force to” means. what i said was that QN used this phrase because they forcibly outed people, which is public information.
some history: “out of the closets and into the streets” was an early gay liberation era motif (about 69-75 era, but used after) encouraging people to change from merely blending in and hiding their homosexuality to trying to liberate themselves from the shackles of doing to and seeking to accept themselves and others by claiming who they are, additionally encouraging them to join the movement and protest via direct action
queer nation was an aids era organization for the most part from my understanding, ive not studied much there yet but itll change soon, they took this phrase discussing coming out for yourselves and turned it more into an obligation to come out and did zaps to forcibly out people and force them to ‘confront their reality’ and stop shaming other homosexuals by staying in the closet and thus not going ‘into the streets’ ie actively fighting for homosexual rights.
zapping was originally for embarassing homophobic politicians and for getting word out about gay liberation, queer nation, as far as i know, took both the slogan and the action, mashed them together, and warped them into a tirade of forced outing.
