it surprises me too, but it shouldn’t. Fanbros (in general)
are really THAT bad at interpreting the meaning & moral message of the stuff they’re into, and as for the tumblr crowd, they projected on star wars their irrational thirst for a vindictive, reactionary kind of social justice. HEAVILY projected, with zero consideration for the characters’ arcs and emotions, and for the overarching themes at the very basis of the franchise.
I’m kinda hoping for a crazy reveal that Kylo was working for good (through succumbing to the dark and Snoke) all along! (aka napkin incident if you know what I mean). That would be a crazy twist on Vader’s redemption, and also make us all have to go back and watch TFA and TLJ to catch clues. Like how Hux says “careful Ren, that your personal interest does not interfere with orders from leader Snoke”.
Like, do we really know what Ben/Kylo wants? what does he see as “the new order” they (he and Rey) should bring to the universe? I wonder if there is more to his Jedi Temple massacre…why they have kept that blank and not tell us how it went down completely? All Ren says is “the night I destroyed his temple” but not massacred anyone?
I just feel that its a really great storytelling opportunity: no one would see it coming, it would result in the fans wishing for Kylo’s redemption and not questioning it at all (as well as a true happy ending with no qualms form all those people whining “why does he deserve a happy ending? he killed Han!”) and it would turn the plot in a way that is not mirroring too closely with Vaders redemption so fans would never feel that they watched exactly the same movie (but similar because I still expect a sacrifice, a pieta, and a resurrection).
They might have to show us flashbacks, so why not make it blow our minds??!!
^ I absolutely anticipate that in the end we’ll look back at Ben’s fall and renperorship with a huh, it was all heading in the right direction all along, even if he’s not consciously being a double agent. If force has a bigger plan, he’s exactly where he should be (which on its own doesn’t clear him of all charges)
