op, a reasonable, good egg: “it’s okay to make characters’ skin darker. it doesn’t erase their culture or heritage. dark skinned people of all cultures and heritages exist. darkening a character’s skin does not suddenly make them from a black heritage and culture.”
some fuck who doesn’t understand how melanin works: “this post can’t stop me because i can’t read. op is racist. making japanese people black (aka making their skin darker because god knows those are the same thing apparently) is racist and erases their japanese heritage and culture. black skinned asian people don’t exist that’s ridiculous. i am Very smart.”
im not disagreeing but japan is (pretty much) 99% japanese, so it’d be very rare to see a black skinned japanese person! I’d definitely like to see art of that so I don’t get why people think its ridiculous
OP we ALL know the real reason why people change the skin colour of Japanese and all Asian characters in general (because is2g the same thing happens to Symmetra and Connie). It’s because Tumblr thinks Asians aren’t “real poc”, so they are racebent to look more African to be “more progressive.”
If it’s wrong and racist to whitewash characters, blackwashing should be given the same treatment.
oh my god these people really exist huh
Hello I am Indian and I am really tired of the way Asians are treated like shit in progressive circles. How our issues, our representation, our cultures are ignored unless it’s to “stick it to the white man.” How whenever we weigh in our opinions on racial issues we’re seen as “too privileged to be POC” and how we “don’t count.” How we aren’t seen as POC unless we are stereotypical bollywood night and the call centre stereotypes. How if we face racism from other POC we’re told it’s our fault and to get over it.
I’m tired of people saying how whitewashing is racist and rightfully so but saying absolutely nothing when Connie and Symmetra are racebent to have African features despite not being African. Hispanics get the same deal when people complain that Lance “isn’t Cuban enough” because he has medium skin, and in fanart he is given a darker skintone. People cry about how “anime doesn’t have POC” completely ignoring that most anime characters are Japanese, or perhaps it shows that they don’t see Japanese people as POC anyway.
It is definitely erasing culture, but apparently racism against Asians is socially acceptable.
