here’s some controversial opinions for y’all:
not every fictional character with a marginalized identity has to be ‘good representation’.
not every fictional character with a marginalized identity has to be a pure, perfect role model who is a sterling example of their people.
fictional characters of every gender identity, sexuality, race, class, body type, and anything else can be written however the writer may choose and should be written in as many ways as characters of other identities are.
‘bad representation’ in my opinion comes when we lack variety in how characters of certain identities are written, when those characters are constantly only written in only one specific way. variety in how certain groups are represented in fiction is essential because marginalized people are people and we’re not all the same, both for better and for worse, and that shouldn’t be denied in fiction by pigeonholing us into only a single kind of fictional character — whether that kind of character is a villain or an uwu cinnamon roll who can’t do anything wrong. forcing characters with certain marginalized identities to always be either totally demonized or put on a pedestal are both equally as ‘problematic’ and equally as dull.
